Biography

 

Dr. Todd Adamson earned his Doctorate of Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in Los Angeles.  He currently works as a licensed psychologist in a private practice environment and at the US Veteran's Initiative with veterans returning from deployments and with military family members.  Dr. Todd integrates a passion for physical and emotional health into his work with children, adolescents, adults, and couples.  His integration of brain, mind, and body helps clients develop a new experience with themselves, others, and the world.   In doing so, Dr. Todd’s clients can begin to cultivate new relationships and engender positive change in their lives.

Dr. Todd has worked in a variety of clinical environments including community mental health centers, medical centers, and psychiatric hospitals.  His experience includes work within the full developmental spectrum of client’s, ranging from work with toddlers to geriatric populations.  He completed practica at the Children's Collective in Los Angeles, Northridge Hospital's Rehabilitation Medicine unit, and Gateways Psychiatric Hospital.   Dr. Todd completed his APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship at the North Chicago VA Medical Center.  While at N. Chicago, Todd received specialized training in PTSD, Medical/Health Psychology, and Testing and Assessment.   Dr. Todd was an APA-Post-Doctoral Fellow at Children's Hospital Los Angeles - Division of Adolescent Medicine and provided a variety of clinical services to adolescents and their family members.  He has experience conducting full psychological assessments for both children and adults including testing for anxiety, depression, personality disorders, attention deficit disorders, neuropsychological disorders, career aptitude, achievement ability, and intelligence.

Dr. Todd provides individual, group, and couples therapy, as well as requested individualized workshops for specific organizations.   He works with a variety of presenting issues including: Anxiety, Depression, Adjustment Disorder, ADHD, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other emotional-behavioral disorders.   He provides services in the areas of stress management, medical/health psychology, motivation, and sports performance enhancement.  Dr. Todd believes strongly in the connection between the mind and the body and works jointly with Dr. Allison Carter in services such as outdoor wilderness therapy, ropes courses and facilitation of issues related to body image, weight loss, and enhancing one’s life through physical activity.

Dr. Todd also enjoys working with athletes and creative artists on performance enhancement.  His own background includes a successful high school track and cross country career followed by a competitive career at The University of Georgia.   He has presented workshops on parental influences on the development of elite athletes, and the athlete in sports rehabilitation.  In addition, he has studied and performed improv and music throughout Los Angeles and at the Chicago Improv Festival.

Dr. Todd’s approach to therapy involves cognitive-behavioral and family systems interventions.  In working with children and adults, he incorporates cognitive–behavioral techniques through the use of art projects, assignments, role-plays, and interpersonal therapy.  Dr. Todd believes incorporating systemic and environmental changes in collaboration with the parents, teachers and others who come into contact with the family provides for a more positive therapeutic experience.  As a result, he often collaborates with these individuals.  In his work with adolescents, he takes an honest and straightforward approach, builds rapport quickly, and affords teens an environment where their opinions are heard and respected.   He helps teens feel validated and allows them to explore their feelings without judgment.   In working with adults and couples, Dr. Todd takes an active approach in an effort to enhance awareness and communication in a timely manner.   He reminds both adolescents and adults that the ability to change is within them, and works to enhance stress management and coping skills tools throughout the therapeutic process.
